Fun photos from the little leaf-shaped island!
Things have been so serious and depressing in the world at large that I think we all need a little escapism -- and what better than a few vacation photos? Besides, I need a break from news-blogging about China, Taiwan, and the EU. . . and from moaning about grad school . . . and from freezing in "spring-like" temperatures of balmy 35 degrees . . .
So check out where I was roaming last week around sunny, warm Taipei, Taiwan . . .
(More Taiwan pix soon, of the quirky, Engrish variety!)

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall complex in Taipei, taken from the steps of the CKS Memorial.
Those are the national theater performance halls on either side. Fab!

The Grand Hotel in Taipei, the mother of all fancypants hotels in Taiwan.
It's the only hotel in the world that looks like a Chinese imperial palace. Priceyyyyyyy!

Lovely garden with pavilion at a rest stop (!) between Taipei and Taichung.

Here's a shot of "Old Taipei" -- a district with more herbalist shops and less ultramodern skyscrapers.

Taiwan: a study in contrasts!
On the left, Taipei 101, the pride and joy of the city, brand-new, and at 508 meters, the world's tallest building.
On the right, a random rice paddy by the side of the highway outside of Taichung.

I'll end with this for now:
The view from Taipei 101's observation deck: Taipei city buildings and the green, green mountains beyond. Gorgeous.
