Taiwan Pix: Reactions to Anti-Secession Law

posted Sunday, 20 March 2005

Well, I did promise some pix as a follow-up to an informal round-up of responses to Beijing's latest move, so here they are:

That's Lai Shin-yuan of the Taiwan Solidarity Union, speaking in front of a protest in Taipei on March 14,
the day Beijing passed the new law.  Behind her are the hunger strikers
who protested with a 30-hour fast.  (Now you know they must be really upset
if Taiwanese are going to quit eating!)

Plenty of interviews with the "Taiwanese Street" on the news.

Front page of one of the numerous papers on March 14.
Left is Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian, right is Chinese leader Hu Jintao.
The headline roughly translated reads:
"Many gather to protect Taiwan" or something like that.
The bottom of the page has a shot of demonstrators.

The next day's headline from the English edition.

Any kind of support from the U.S. is front-page material.

Well, there you have my informal glance at some Taiwanese media.  Yes, yes, I know it all tends to be very pro-Taiwan and anti-Beijing.  Still, it's interesting to read -- especially as much of foreign media has only a superficial grasp of the Taiwan-China problem and tends to focus more on China anyway.

That's it. The next Taiwan post will be fun photos from my trip.  No more politics for a little while!
