It's over. I will confess to a certain amount of grim satisfaction and even some Schadenfreude (because I guess I am a wicked person) at the politicians' defeat. I remain convinced that it would have been an absolute travesty for this egregiously misguided bill to pass despite the overwhelming opposition of much of the electorate. It prioritized amnesty over securing the borders and enforcing the law, and it was an insult to every law-abiding American, legal resident, and legal immigrant. It had its priorities all wrong, and its supporters pursued its passage with the worst mixture of cheap demogoguery and arrogant disregard for all opposition.
I for one opposed this bill because of its mixed-up priorities and the clear impossibility of meaningful implementation, and I was frankly shocked at the viciousness of the politicians' attempt to cram it down my throat by force anyway by accusing me of being a racist/bigot/xenophobe/nativist, etc.
Good-bye, immigration bill! Good riddance to bad garbage, indeed.
Now can we PLEASE get to trying to find real solutions for the illegal immigration problem? How about enforcing the border? Just a suggestion.
