The Latino Issues blog has an interesting perspective. It's also a great Latino blog worth exploring in general. (Check out his opinion on the "Nuestro Himno" business.)
I've been too busy to post on the immigration mess, but I'm going to say this: all my relatives immigrated legally. All our friends did too, immigrating to America from all different countries, like Vietnam, South Korea, India, Taiwan, mainland China, Germany, Canada, etc. etc. They all followed the rules, obeyed the law, waited their turn, filed their paperwork, and did everything legally. Frankly, I think giving amnesty to millions of illegal immigants is an insult and a slap in the face to everyone who came to America legally. I am in favor of immigration -- legal immigration.
The entire spectacle of illegal immigrants out in the streets demanding things is just too much. (Of course, we have to remember too that some of the radical groups out there have their own sordid agendas to push and are using the immigration debate as an excuse.)
While I'm at it, I also criticize the government for being a total failure when it comes to border control. It's absolutely disgraceful that there is ongoing chaos at the borders. We do have domestic labor market issues that need addressing. But having a chaotic border is not accceptable. Remember too that a border is between two countries, and that the other side ought to do its part as well (though in this case, it most probably won't).
As for the media coverage, some of it has been stomach-churningly biased in favor of the protestors. Look, why does everything have to be depicted as a big racial thing? If you support immigration reform, then you're a "racist" who hates Latinos. (I don't think I'm a racist. No, I don't hate Latinos!) Plus the crazy "progressives" are out there in the streets waving their stupid Che Guevara flags and you know exactly how I feel about him!
I won't even start on the ludicrous but pious-sounding memes that are going around about the immigration mess.
More on this later if I still have energy after teaching. For now, check out this interesting post (link xie-xie to blog pal Bruce Chang.)
UPDATE: Blog friend Pursuit of Serenity has an interesting post on this and talks about German immigration issues also, along with how some German media arecovering the US immigration protests. Alas, it seems that some German coverage is presenting a not-very-balanced analysis.
