There are still quiet unsung heroes in academia. Take a look at the response of some Iraqi college students of Baghdad Technology University. Read the whole thing.
Here are the quotes of the day from some of those students:
"We have lost many friends and professors. But in spite of our wounds, we want to show our solidarity with the students of Virginia Tech who are our brothers in humanity and in pursuing knowledge." -- Yassir Nazar, head of the student union at Baghdad Tech
"We denounce the shooting in Virginia Tech because it targeted students of knowledge. Al-Qaida in Iraq does the same thing here in an effort to make ignorance prevail so its ideology can win." -- Hassan Abdul-Karim, junior engineering major
"But we are determined to complete our studies and do all we can for our country." -- Mohammed Akram, third-year chemical engineering student
Wow. That's heroism and true grit. (Defeatists, take note. These students, and more ordinary Iraqis like them, are precisely the people you would abandon.)
