Here's some forgotten history for you, gentle reader: Most folks don't know this, but over 1000 Allied troops were captured and imprisoned by the Japanese on Taiwan during World War II.
Today President Chen honored these veterans during the annual Remembrance Weekend events, in association with the Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society.
I'll bet you haven't heard about any of these folks in your standard history textbook!
PS -- Did you know there are now commemorative Taiwanese postage stamps?
UPDATE 1: The Taipei Times has a follow-up story on British POWs in Taiwan.
UPDATE 2: Recall too the forgotten history of Taiwanese forced to fight for Japan in WWII.
